Advanced Clean Trucks Regulation
On March 31, 2023, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) granted California waivers for two California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations aimed at reducing emissions standards for new heavy-duty vehicles.
Uniquely as a state, California can pass air quality regulations more stringent than that of federal regulations. For California’s more stringent regulations on motor vehicle however, the US EPA must grant these regulations waivers.
In one of the recently granted waiver CARB was seeking authority to require vehicle manufacturers to produce and sell certain amounts of zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. This CARB regulation is the Advanced Clean Truck Regulation. Now that California has the waivers, other states may now adopt the regulation as well.
The other waiver gave CARB enforcement authority over the 2018 heavy-duty diesel engine vehicle warranty amendments.
