UCON's Position on Calls to Suspend the State Gas Tax

UCON in Washington DC May 11-13

There are renewed calls at both the state and federal level to suspend the gas tax, with proposals being framed as short-term relief at the pump for consumers. While that message may resonate on the surface, the impact on our industry would be significant.

UCON has consistently fought efforts to suspend or repeal the gas tax. These proposals directly undermine the dedicated funding that supports critical infrastructure investments. A gas tax holiday puts projects at risk, delays critical improvements, and weakens the infrastructure we all rely on.

We are actively engaged on this issue and working closely with stakeholders at both the state and federal level to ensure policymakers understand the real consequences. Our message is straightforward. Suspending the gas tax does not solve the problem. It shifts the burden and creates long-term challenges for infrastructure funding and project delivery.

UCON traveled to Washington, D.C., May 11-13, to participate in the American Road and Transportation Builders (ARTBA) Association Federal Issues Program fly-in, met with federal leaders, and highlighted the priorities that matter most to our members and the construction industry.

For more background on the current push to suspend the gas tax and what it means nationally, we encourage you to read ARTBA’s latest update

We will continue to keep members informed as this conversation evolves. Your engagement and awareness on these issues remain critical as we work to protect infrastructure funding and the future of our industry. For more information, contact Gus Flores, UCON Director of Government Relations.
